Now, there are apps, browser sites, devices and more that connect users with digital reading material. There really wasn’t any such thing as the e-book market before Amazon released it’s Kindle. Its size (being able to fit inside a woman’s purse) and its massive storage space, which could hold thousands of books, made it the ideal travel and work companion. It was the first accessible device of its kind. It was a project kept heavily under wraps by Amazon while it was being developed for fear that Apple or Google was on its way to producing a competitor. The message displayed to shoppers suggests it's Google's fault for not permitting eBook sales, but it's Amazon's decision to just pull the functionality. The Kindle took the electric book market by storm when it was introduced in 2007. But, as of June 1st, 2022, Google promised to actually enforce the policies and make companies respect its billing system rules, threatening to remove them if they did not comply.Īs a result, Amazon decided to stop allowing users to buy Kindle books via its apps, whether we're talking about the Amazon app or the Kindle one. Of course, as everyone knows, not all sellers have been abiding by this rule, including Amazon. In doing so, Google gets a share of the sale.

More specifically, as per Google's Play Console Help page, Google expects apps to use the company's own billing system to sell digital goods.

While Google has similar rules for its Google Play Store, they have seldom been enforced.

The company made this move in order to avoid paying extra fees on digital goods, as per the Apple App Store rules. In 2011, Amazon stopped offering digital book purchases via its iOS app.
